Studiekeuze: ervaringen fysische geografie universiteit utrecht

Voor de mensen die bezig zijn met hun studiekeuze zou ik graag mijn ervaringen met de studie fysische geografie aan de universiteit in Utrecht toelichten. Ik heb bij de faculteit geowetenschappen, departement fysische geografie  de bachelor Fysische Geografie en de master Physical Geography gevolgd.

De bachelor heeft te leiden onder de bijzonder slechte adminstratie en de totale desinteresse van het administratief personeel.

Simpel voorbeeld: de universiteit maakt en fout met de inschrijving, let op: de universiteit, niet de student. Ik ben MAANDEN bezig geweest met van het kastje naar de muur gestuurd te worden. Mailjes die ik daarbij ontvangen heb van de adminstratie begonnen niet met hallo/beste/groet, nee, die begonnen letterlijk met "Ik wordt hier zo moe van"

Heel tekenend voor de houding van de administratie. Helaas wordt het tijdens de Master erger.

De master-track Quaternary Geology and Climate Change is een aanfluiting. Er zit welgeteld ÉÉN vak in dat daadwerkelijk een vak is dat de lading van de track dekt. Helaas wordt het vak gegeven door een weinig gemotiveerde docent en is het voor 95% gewoon herhaling van vakken uit de bachelor.

Van mijn masteronderzoek heeft de faculteit één grote teringbende (excuses voor het woord) gemaakt. Het verhaal is te lang om hier helemaal neer te zetten, maar de zak-maar-in-de-stront houding van de universiteit was ongelovelijk onbeschoft.

Ik ben nog nooit eerder in mijn leven zo beledigd.

Na 7 maanden bezig te zijn geweest met mijn onderzoek zijn daar een paar namen op gezet, van de helft heb ik het gezicht nooit gezien, en is het onder de de naam van een PHD (aio) opgestuurd voor publicatie. Ter verduidelijking: Hij heeft alleen mijn onderzoek samengevat en ik heb hem gedurende mijn onderzoek een alleen paar keer laten weten hoe ver ik was.

Mijn Masteronderzoek zou begeleid worden door hem (wat niet mag volgens de regels van de universiteit zelf omdat het hier een aio betreft en geen docent) en door een docent.

Die laatste heeft tijdens mijn onderzoek niet alleen totale desinteresse uitegdrukt voor mijn onderzoek, maar zich zelfs uiterst onbeschoft gedragen richting mij en een enkele medestudent. Een studente waar hij wat meer 'feeling' mee had is wel uiterst uitgebreid begeleid.

Opmerkingen, verzoeken en emails werden totaal genegeerd. Op een uiteindelijke klacht na afronding van mijn master werd woedend gereageerd.

Het verhaal is natuurlijk veel uitgebreider, maar de deatils maken het alleen maar stuitender.

Ik kan iedereen die op zoek is naar een studie daarom van harte de studie Fysische Geografie aan de Universiteit Utrecht afraden.


Ik had nooit verwacht dat academici en administratief personeel bij een universiteit zulk ongelovelijk kinderachtig en beledigend gedrag zou kunnen vertonen.


Tot slot moet ik vermelden dat het onmogelijk gemaakt wordt om op tijd af te studeren. De extra kosten die daardoor gemaakt worden zijn voor de student. Ik ben helaas niet de enige met al deze ervaringen, hoewel de kusten & rivieren track en de hydrology track minder te leiden hebben onder rotte appels onder de aio's/docenten. Helaas hebben die wel te maken met dezelfde dramatische informatievoorziening en de onbeschoftheid van het administratief personeel.

Bij interesse in deze studierichting kan ik van harte aanbevelen naar de  Universiteit Van Amsterdam te kijken, ook de Universiteit Twente en Wageningen bieden studies aan in dit werkgebied.

Cool Volvo at the beach

I did ride the bikes this week, but nothing special. Went to the beach last friday (with the car) and saw this cool Volvo in the parking lot:

Venus and Jupiter are just visible on the photo. Nice night for a walk on the beach.

Picking up Horse photography again too, there's some money in that business....

In other news: I am working hard on a brand new website. The blogspot themes are just a bit too limited for what I want. More on that later....

Welcome to the first day of the rest of my life :)

So.... That is my car and it's me driving it. Well, technically, it's still my brother's car, but that's just a matter of some paper work.

Where I'm driving? On the way to my new job, just north of Amsterdam. I finished my study and found a really nice job in a really short time. But don't worry, nothing will change about my motorcycle-life :)

Winter in Holland

Winter has hit us unexpectedly, but hard. Last Friday we had the lowest temperatures measured in 27 years. For people that are not familiar with the Netherlands: This country is very flat and has a lot of water. So freezing temperatures means: A lot of ice. Every time this happens a kind of ice-skate-fever breaks out in the Netherlands. So the bikes will remain in the shed and I'll be on the ice the next week or so.

Went to the horses again on the CB

The horse photo's I posted last week caused a bit of a stir, within hours I had a stack of requests for similar photos, so I went back to take some more last night. 

On the way back I passed a big parking lot with a nice, big puddle of water. I thought it would make for some interesting photos.

This one is a bit out of focus, but I didn't get the time to take another one. I use very old lenses so I have to focus manually. Nearly impossible in the dark through the moderate quality viewfinder of my camera. The screen resolution of the camera is also low, causing some unpleasent surprises like this photo back home. But I really shouldn't complain.

Took the CB to the horses again to try the remote flashing technique on my mother in law's horse. I am very happy with the result :)

Because pretty much any old machine is cool

A WW2 Il-2 Ground attack aircraft that was pulled from a swamp was restored to flying condition in Russia. Just love old machines like this and it's a good to see pieces of history like this working again, even if the purpose of the machine is inhuman. Maybe even more so in that case, because people shouldn't forget the horror of war.

Non bike related: A bit of history

This is a small, non bike related, sidestep from what this blog usually is about. Thought you might find it interesting. If history is not your thing, just skip this post ;)


Went to the Grebbeberg today. The Grebbeberg is a hill on the banks of the River Rhine in the center of the Netherlands that was formed in the second to last ice age. The ice pushed earth ahead of itself while expanding to the south and forming a line of hills of which the Grebbeberg is one.

So what makes it special? It's a place oozing with history. From the top of te Grebbeberg you can see the famous church tower of the nearby ancient city of Rhenen (we couldn't today, too foggy). The church is late medieval, but the history of the place goes back much further than that. It is hard to see on the photo, the scale of the thing is MASSIVE and impossible to catch in one photo because of the trees, but you can see an earth wall if you look carefully:

That wall is part of a fortress that is estimated to be from 700 - 800 A.D.. But the place goes even further back in time.... Inside the hill flint fragments have been found that once were Neanderthal tools. 

In more recent time this hill saw some military action too. At the start of world war two this hill was the most important part of the main defense line: the Hollandse Waterlinie. The hill saw a lot of action, pretty much every tree older than 70 years can testify to that.

Every tree on the mountain that is older than 70 years bears a huge number of battle scars caused by bullets and shell fragments.

But that's all the long gone past. Today the whole area is a great place to be with a magnificent forest

And some great views on the river on which I spend the last year doing research: the River Rhine (it's flooding history to be precise). I will finish the report on these researches this week (one of them has already been submitted for publishing. Just not with my name on it, while it is 100% my research. No further comments needed.). As soon as it's corrected, I will be done with the study. Finished.

Poland

I've been away or a few days to a wedding in Poland. I have to admit that I did not have a very positive image of Poland before I went, but that was all ignorance. I'll keep it short: Beautiful country, wonderful people, hospitality must have been invented by the Polish, traffic is way better then I expected and I will NEVER EVER get in a car again that is being driven by my mother in law. NEVER.

But Poland is now somewhere near the top of the list of countries I want to go on vacation to.

Winter

It'll start snowing soon and they'll start poring salt on all the roads. It looks like I'll have the CB finished just in time to put it away for weeks/months (however long it will take for the salt to disappear from the roads). I hate winter.

Snow!!!

Wanted to work on the Suzuki today, but the weater made that impossible. This much snow is highly unusual these days. It made the city really entertaining though. Lots of snowballfights with strangers :)
